I recently began eating a whole-food plant-based diet and decided to search for the tastiest vegan Nasi Lemak! Hainan Village @ Taman Megah was my first stop.
Rendang vegetarian chicken or mutton? I dragged a meat-loving friend with me so I decided mutton would be more enticing. I wasn’t wrong. I gave my friend the egg and we quickly polished off the tasty tempeh, crunchy peanuts, and delicious curry potatoes. The ikan bilis proved interesting but wasn’t crispy enough while the sambal was on the sweet side. I didn’t think much of the mutton because I generally don’t enjoy mock meat but the curry was decent and went nicely with the lightly fragrant coconut rice.
We also tried the Fried Turnip Cake which was fried to a crisp and really yummy. And the Homemade Pumpkin Tofu which was soft and silky although there wasn't enough pumpkin to create a thick gravy.
The other two dishes were only so-so. The Broccoli with Mixed Mushroom didn’t have much oomph while the sauce for the Fruit Rojak was way too sweet. But the use of a thin crisp slice of ‘fu-chuk’ as a healthier alternative to an oily fried cracker was a nice touch!
All in all, I was pleasantly surprised by the meal and the fact that the place was packed with customers even though they don’t serve meat. My rating for the Nasi Lemak? Four out of five. On to my next food adventure!
