Sweden Mourns Its Venerable Eel
The international press is bidding farewell to Sweden's oldest resident, an eel who lived in a well for 155 years.
Some people have ghosts in their attics.Tomas Kjellman, resident in the little fishing town of Brantevik in Skåne, has always had an eel in his well. "My family bought the cottage in 1962, and we always knew the housepet was included," Kjellman told The Local.
The eel, simply named Eel, was tossed into the well in 1859 -- a common practice at the time, as the eels ate insects and other pests in the well-water. Eel's remains are now frozen and will soon be sent -- no, not to a Japanese restaurant -- to zoologists, who are keen to investigate his extraordinary life span. Typically, eels live for 7-10 years. Eel is survived by his partner, a resident of the same well, who is a mere 110 years old.
Eel was the subject of books, articles and documentaries, and he survived two world wars. None of this would have been possible, of course, if he'd ended up as unagi.
