End The Cruel Confinement Of Mother Pigs And Baby Calves

Most mother pigs used by the pork industry are confined in gestation crates, metal cages so small they can hardly move. Veal crates immobilize baby calves in similar ways. Within days or even hours of birth, calves raised for veal are taken away from their mothers and locked in cages. A5236/S3401 would ban cruel gestation and veal crates in New Jersey and allow mother pigs and baby calves enough space to turn around freely, lie down, stand up and fully extend their limbs. We've been fighting for this bill to pass together with a coalition of other animal rights organizations, and now Steve Sweeney and Speaker Craig J. Coughlin have allowed S.3401/A.5236 to be posted in committee. While we're appreciative that they have allowed this to be posted in committee, we look forward to the next step: for this reasonable, popular measure to be posted for a floor vote. #BantheCratesNJ
