In Kenny Torella's article on the current avian flu outbreak devastating the U.S., he focuses on how some farms are using ventilation shutdown (VSD) and ventilation shutdown plus (VSD+) to kill birds who've been exposed to the virus. You can learn more about VSD and about Animal Outlook's recently obtained footage from VSD experiments at North Carolina State University which showed them writing, gasping, panting, staggering, and even throwing themselves against the walls of their cages. "It took around 91 minutes for the birds to die using the standard ventilation shutdown method and 53 minutes when heat was added, 11.5 minutes when carbon dioxide was added, and nine minutes when both heat and carbon dioxide were added," Kenny writes.
