Today Is National Egg Day, But It''s Nothing To Celebrate. Hens Used In The Egg I..
Today is National Egg Day, but it's nothing to celebrate.
Hens used in the egg industry suffer tremendously, most confined to tiny wire cages with other birds, unable to stretch their wings or perform natural behaviors. Everything natural is stripped away from them, and some even endure painful mutilations such as having the sensitive tips of their beaks cut off to prevent fighting birds from causing injury to one another inside the cages.
But about half of the animals born into the egg industry never even make it to their second day of life. If the chicken is born male, the industry sees no use for them and they are killed by suffocation, electrocution, or be being ground up alive in giant macerators.
Around 30,000 freshly hatched chicks are killed every single hour in the United States. Help make this cruel practice a thing of the past. And please, choose alternatives to eggs.
