đź’™ Today, we mourn the loss of a pioneer in the fight for Animal Rights, Steven (Steve) M. Wise, who passed away at the age of 73. Steve's journey into animal advocacy began during his undergraduate years at the College of William and Mary, where his involvement in the anti-Vietnam War movement ignited his passion for justice.
Inspired by Peter Singer's work, "Animal Liberation," Steve shifted his career focus, leaving behind his role as a criminal defense attorney to lead the Animal Legal Defense Fund as president from 1985 to 1995.
In 1995, Steve's dedication to advancing the cause of animal rights led him to establish the Nonhuman Rights Project, marking a significant milestone in the movement. As the founder of the NHRP, Steve envisioned a future where nonhuman animals would be recognized as more than mere property, advocating tirelessly for their legal personhood and fundamental rights.
For more than 25 years, Wise has been arguing that animals who have cognitive complexities similar to humans should legally have rights.
His enduring legacy includes not only his pioneering legal efforts but also his profound written contributions. Through books like “Drawing the Line: Science and the Case for Animal Rights” and “Rattling The Cage: Toward Legal Rights For Animals,” he illuminated the path toward a more just and compassionate society for all feeling beings.
Steve also worked on a groundbreaking documentary released in 2016 called “Unlocking the Cage,” exploring the ethical and legal complexities of animal rights to secure legal personhood for chimpanzees, whales, dolphins, and elephants.
✊Steve's legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
