Bats Are Terrifying: Here’s Proof
Bats are terrifying animals, right? After all, there’s a really good reason why they’re depicted as blood-sucking monsters in horror films … people wouldn’t just make that up. Or would they?
Well, we know that many animals are given bad reputations as a result of our misconceptions about them – and when it comes to bats, we’re not sold on the whole “scary” thing. Bats play an integral role in our global ecosystem, helping to control pest populations and pollinating many of the foods we eat every day.
What is scary about bats, however, is the fact that their populations are in decline. Many bat species are in danger of extinction due to habitat loss, culls, and fatal white-nose syndrome.
The first step in protecting bats is raising awareness for their plight – and dispelling any wrongful myths that prevent people from standing up for them. We need bats more than bats need us, so it’s time we started acting like it.
If you want to be an ecological "good citizen", respecting all creatures' places in the ecosystem is a good way to start. Another is to reduce or eliminate the amount of meat in your own diet.
