Is farm-to-table more humane?
In most cases, probably not. Some people believe that buying meat from smaller farms avoids the cruelty involved in factory farming. Well, maybe, but the conditions on the small farms are often deplorable, as well.
As the folks at Farm Sanctuary aptly point out, whenever you put a price tag on an animal, you're treating it as a commodity, and there is no incentive to treat it with compassion when you're focused on profit.
