Nothing Can Tear Us Apart
Nothing Can Tear Us Apart
There may be nothing sweeter than puppy love, but this adorable reunion video proves there's nothing stronger than the bond between a sea otter and her pup.
When a two-day-old otter was discovered lost at sea in San Luis Obispo's Morro Bay, the Marine Mammal Center immediately set out to try and find her mother. A strong tide and winds had pulled the female pup away as her mother foraged for food, and bystanders called the non-profit after spotting the distressed newborn all by herself. It's not uncommon for mother nature to separate otters from their pups, but it is incredibly rare that they will ever be reunited.
But the Marine Mammal Center had hope, joining forces with the Morro Bay Harbor Department and senior environmental scientist Mike Harris as they began their search. Harris, who works for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, said they were searching for any female otters who would respond to the pup's distinct smell or sound, he told the San Luis Obispo Tribune.
The first six female otters looked up when they heard the pup's call, but did not approach the boat. But the seventh female otter immediately responded to her baby's cries with a high-pitched call of her own, and began swimming toward the boat. 'There was no doubt in my mind that this was mom,' Harris said. When Harris realized the mother was frightened by the size of the boat and the noise of its engine, he decided to gently toss the pup in the water so she could reach her newborn.
The pup, which physically can't sink, floats alone for a few seconds before her mother suddenly appears underwater, popping up to hug her baby to her belly. Mother and daughter then happily swim away together, still in a tight embrace.
