Sir David Attenborough: Story of Life App
To celebrate Sir David Attenborough's amazing work over the years, BBC Earth is launching The Story of Life, an app featuring the largest-ever digital release of all his work.
The app features more than 1,000 clips from Attenborough’s documentaries of the past 50 years, all in bitesize videos spanning three to seven minutes. You can watch Sir Attenborough’s crafted collections, such as beautiful 'birds of paradise', or search different species or habitats to find all the videos relating to that topic.
“This is natural history for the digital age, allowing people to explore the story of life on Earth and share their favourite natural history moments with the world," said Sir David Attenborough.
The best part about the new app is that you can make your own nature documentaries, just like Attenborough, using the app’s ‘My Collections’ tool.
Simply choose a topic you want to make a documentary about, for instance, fish. You then choose five different clips from a selection and bring them together in a seamless video. Sir David might have some serious competition.
The app has been produced by BBC Earth with AKQA with the intention of publicising Attenborough’s amazing work over the years and to encourage friends and families to share their favourite videos, either through social media or in person together.
Speaking about the launch of the app, BBC Earth’s editor Matt Walker told WIRED: “Natural history can both entertain and educate at the same time. It brings people together and we hope this app can do it in a way that hasn’t been done before.”
The app reflects the way people watch and consume media nowadays. People don’t want to be constrained to “one big broadcast moment” anymore, but can instead use The Story of Life app to discover and discuss their favourite natural history moments, as long as they are connected to Wi-Fi of course.
Besides demonstrating clips from different documentaries, it also has behind-the-scenes footage from the filming of Planet Earth II. It's fascinating to watch the team try and film Komodo Dragons in a national park and there’s also a video of Sir Attenborough taking a hot air balloon ride 10,000 feet into the sky.
As the series goes on, more videos will be added to the app. Alternatively, you will be able to catch all the clips on the BBC Earth website.
