Charging Hippo
"Who you callin' cute?"
Most of us think hippos are cute to look at. In the real world, though, they are the deadliest animals in Africa, killing over 500 people a year on average. The hippo is about 1,500kg of unpredictable aggression. It's an animal that commands (and deserves) respect.
The name, hippopotamus, or "river horse" in Greek, is a misnomer. The hippo's closest living relatives are cetaceans -- whales and porpoises -- and like them, it spends most of its time in the water, where it can move about more easily. And quickly!
David Jackson, passenger on a boat on the Chobe River in Botswana, captured this footage with his iPhone. He commented, "The hippo was closer to the boat than it appears on the video. It is amazing how fast a hippo can move in water; never under estimate a hippo's speed by its physical size."
