Ready For Plastic-Free Selangor?
Ready For Plastic-Free Selangor?
On 1st Jan 2017, Selangor will kickstart the new year by extending its “No Plastic Bag Day” campaign on Saturdays to seven days. The state also aims to be free of polystyrene containers.
This follows the launch of the #BebasPlastik campaign to highlight its plastic-free policy starting Jan 1.
Single-use / disposable plastic bags will no longer be freely available to consumers. A RM0.20 charge will be incurred on all days.
Exception applies to use of plastic bags for raw food, meat products, food that may leak, unwrapped loose seeds, flowers, vegetables with soil, prescription drugs, and aquatic creatures.
Local council by-laws have been revised to support this policy and retailers must agree to go plastic-free when applying for or renewing their licence. All retailers will be provided with visual materials to build awareness of the #BebasPlastik campaign.
71% of Selangor folk feel that ‘No Plastic Bag’ on Saturdays only is not enough. The Selangor government is committed to change by making it a policy to fight rampant littering and to address environmental issues like global warming.
The Selangor government has also stopped using plastic bags and polystyrene at all official events and buildings.
To support the public in implementing this lifestyle change, the state government also launched an educational website where residents can pledge to go plastic-free and encourage shopkeepers, retailers and vendors to sign up as well.
Good job to Selangor for this much-needed green initiative! Let's play our part in reducing plastic bag consumption together.
