'Piggy Bank' Turtle Dies After Eating 11 Pounds of Coins
A popular turtle that called a public pond in Thailand home died Tuesday morning due to blood poisoning after eating 915 coins.
Tourists had thrown their loose change into Omsin's habitat in the hopes of getting good luck.
Unfortunately, the 25-year-old reptile, whose name means "Piggy Bank" in Thai, found the shiny objects and gobbled them up, USA Today reports.
Omsin underwent four hours of surgery March 6 to have the mass of metal removed from her stomach after it was noticed that the famous Chonburi province resident began having trouble swimming and its shell cracked under the weight of the coins.
On Saturday, Omsin had a second operation when a checkup suggested it was suffering from intestinal blockage.
Despite a life expectancy of 80 years, "Piggy Bank" would fail to wake up until finally dying just days later.
Green sea turtles are an endangered species.
