Giant Rats Sniff Out Landmines
Giant Rats Sniff Out Landmines
Not long ago, we posted a story about the giant rats in Africa that have proven far more effective than lab technicians at diagnosing tuberculosis ( https://FB.com/903154306411522 ), but that's not the only life-saving skill these rats possess – they can also sniff out landmines!
They're now working in several African countries, including Mozambique, Angola and Tanzania, and right here in ASEAN, Cambodia is now employing a team of the giant African pouched rats to uncover unexploded ordnance throughout the kingdom.
Using bananas and the small clickers used to train puppies, a team in Tanzania from the Belgian NGO Apopo is teaching dozens of African giant pouched rats to sniff out landmines, as seen in this video. Apopo has already had great success reclaiming millions of square metres of land in Angola and Mozambique – its rats can each search 200 square metres of land in just 20 minutes. Rat training manager Abdullah Mchomvu explains how the programme works.
Did you ever think we'd be reading about thousands of lives being saved by giant rats? Makes you wonder how much we've underestimated other animals, doesn't it? Let's show all species their due respect and awe by reducing or eliminating meat from our diets.
That's the purpose of http://KindMeal.my – to connect people to compassionate, meat-free dining. Check us out!
